My bronzes are an in-depth study of archetypes and the symbols used in
communicating their relevance in our everyday lives. A commercial, city,
or university center provides a traditional and appropriate location for
a monumental symbol of unification of spirit.
TWIST OF FATE is a composition of diverse lifestyles, ages, and talents
united by a circle--the traditional symbol of unity. The ring has this
symbolism in marriage, in describing a life cycle, and in representing
infinity. Community leaders gathered at the "round table" in
ancient England where many of our laws originated. This ring is modernized
with corners and arcs of other, larger rings intersecting the uniting
circle. Resting on these larger arcs are the people whose existence revolves
around that location. The accent in TWIST OF FATE is on the human life
cycle of regeneration: young and old couples, death, and the children
who link us.
Because this unity of spirit requires dedication and excellence to achieve,
the symbol is elevated above our daily existence by a concrete and stone
plinth (traditional building materials.) The brushed stainless steel ring
is a tribute to our improved technology and its use. Bronze is traditional
for monuments and used in my unique style, the combination of bronze and
brushed stainless steel surfaces provides a striking sculpture.
The figures are life-size, fairly simple and abstract, while the faces
and hands emerge from the shapes as more realistic. The patina is potash
gray. The brushed inner ring and all other surfaces would be protected
from the elements by a coating of Increlac (an industrial sealant specifically
designed for preserving bronze outdoors), and wax. Maintenance is minimal,
involving only inspection, touch-up of chips, and re-waxing annually.
The bronze is fastened to the concrete with large hidden bolts, and the
concrete is coated with a preservative requiring annual renewal.
The top of the ring is 15-16 feet above the ground.
